James Wolf is a native of Iowa and a graduate of Simpson College. He spent his business career as the owner of an independent insurance agency. He is a devoted father and enlisted the help of his son and daughter, Scott and Christy, to grow and expand the company. He retired successfully, and what began as a small insurance agency has now become a highly successful industry leader, with his son and daughter at the helm.
James hasn't let retirement dull his passion for life. He is an avid outdoorsman and has hunted, fished, and visited four continents. He makes a yearly trip to Namibia, Africa, where he joins his grandaughter in adventures on her farm and spends as much time as he can with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and exploring the world.
From an early age, James was enchanted with American and World History. He has read and studied the American Civil War intensively, including rare historical documents and volumes from various libraries in the United States. He has also visited every major battlefield from the U.S. Civil War and spent hundreds of hours walking the grounds analyzing what might have occurred. Wolf was always intrigued by the thought that primitive men, fighting with Stone Age weapons, were alive at the same time as the dropping of the atomic bomb, a detail which shaped the telling of No Good Day to Die.
As a young man, James visited the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand, near Billings, Montana. He was left with a burning curiosity about Native American History, especially the life of the Lakota Sioux and the Northern and Southern Cheyenne of the 19th Century. Overcome with a feeling that their story needed to be told, James began the ten-year journey of writing his book, No Good Day to Die.
Hailed a "memorable memorial to all warriors past and present" by the Historical Novel Society, No Good Day to Die beautifully portrays the warriors and soldiers caught in a war brought on by clashing cultures, gold, land, and America's quest for the West. Inspired by the many walks amongst the battlefields and named after Wolf's grandchildren, the unique cast of characters weaves the themes of American and Western history into a portrait filled with both bravery and defiance.
James calls the book his "difference in the world" and hopes readers finish with a better understanding of Western History and a more profound compassion for the people and societies involved in land wars. Nowadays, he can be found in his hometown of Bozeman, Montana, where he lives with his beloved wife, Phyllis, and his best dog, Labrador Retriever, Mindy. He attends church, hunts with his family, travels as often as possible, and is a voracious reader.
